The junior football season may have fizzled but that has not stopped a peninsula club from continued success.

Holbrook Hornets has been honoured by Suffolk FA after being highly commended in The FA and McDonald’s Grassroots Football Awards of the Season, for the whole of the county.

They were pipped to top spot by Halesworth Town Youth FC but chairman Paul Moore was delighted with all the players, coaches and volunteers who have made Holbrook so highly respected.

‘We are delighted to have been considered for nomination and even more delighted to have received a Highly Commended as ‘2020 Grassroots Club of the Year’,” said Paul.

“We are a very small community-based club compared to other clubs, however our ethos of ‘providing football for all’ and the enthusiasm and commitment of the fabulous people we have involved in the Club make the difference.

“So my thanks go to them, our players and the families from the Peninsula community who continue to support us.”

With a record number of 87 entries – more than double that of last year – it was never going to be an easy job for the judges.

So difficult was it to separate some of the entries that a record number of eight entries were Highly Commended – and two of those were in the same category for the Grassroots Volunteer of the Year.

The Norfolk & Suffolk Youth League won two awards, but the remaining eight categories were shared around.
